"The big picture, what should educators be doing with students in this modern era"

3 arguments:
1. Educational "theories" are ideologies
The Structure of ideology
Utopia: An imagined picture of an ideal society
Diagnosis: A description and analysis of the actual society
E.g. Maori culture language dying out
Strategy:The means to change the actual society into the ideal society
E.g. Education
Collective: A social group that will carry out the change
E.g. Maori & tribes working together to carry out change

Political & Educational Ideologies have the same structure:

Pedagogical Ideology:
Utopia:Image of the ideal graduate "the educated man"
Diagnosis:Description. Of the actual students
Strategy:The pattern of teaching, the method of assessing, etc
Collective:The educational community

Ideology of teaching thinking
Utopia: image of good thinker
Diagnosis: description of actual thinker
Strategy:The pattern of teaching, the method of assessing, etc
Collective:The educational community

2. There are 3 meta-ideologues in education

Socialisation
Adapting the child to society, imparting useful behaviours

Acculturation
Shaping the child's character in light of the values of the preferred culture

Individualisation
Fostering the autonomy and the authenticity of the child

The Formula of a teaching

Teacher + instruction + content + student = purpose
The purpose= the desired graduate
The desired graduate = knowledge! skills! traits, worldview

P1 Socialisation
Teacher: Classroom manager; imparts facts & skills.
Instruction: autocratic; exemplifying & exercising
Content: practical & useful
Student: All students are the same, learning by imitation
Purpose: students in society

P2 Acculturation
Teacher: A live. Orel of the demanded values and truth
Instruction: authoritative; modelling
Content: inner value
Student: Different ( should be the same)learning by internalisation
Purpose: The educated person is one whose character reflects cultural values and truth

P3 Individualisation
Teacher: a facilitator
Instruction:  a guidance sensitive to individual needs
Content: supports individual development
Student: each student is unique; self regulated learning
Purpose: The Educated Person is one who fulfills himself/herself

3.You must choose one of them

There is a contradiction between the educational means of the meta-ideologies so you must stick to just one

S= practical pedagogical : aims to produce a worker
A =intellectual, ethical and aesthetic sentiment
I= Humane sentiments: views education as brainwashing and therefore must create new educational environments in which each child is nurtured for themselves
